The Bengal Cat - exotic yes, wild no
The bengal cat
is a very unique cat that deserves a second look. Looking
much like their wild ancestors, the Asian leopard Cat, these
gentle leopards have the sweetness of the average domestic
cat, without the issues that come with them. This is a much
better way for those who love exotic cats looks, to have a
domesticated version of the Leopard Cat.
The goal for the Bengal Cat was to develop a
domestic breed of cat that had a strong
resemblance to its founding ancestor, the
Asian Leopard Cat. These cats were carefully
bred down from its wild ancestor. At the
same time this new breed of cat was bred to
be pleasant, trustworthy, and a wonderful
family companion. The conformation is
definitely that of the Asian Leopard cat.
The Bengal Cat is now most registered breed
in TICA, (The International Cat Association).
These fabulous felines also have an affinity
for running water and normally don't mind
getting wet. A lot of owners are sure have
stories about their cat’s affection for
running water, even jumping into a sink or
tub. Bengal cats have a lot of energy, are
very intelligent, curious, and are
interactive with their owners, wanting to be
in the middle of everything human. They
often follow their owners around the house
as household chores are performed. A Bengal
cat enjoys its playtime! Playing games is
something a Bengal can learn and really
enjoys, such as hide and seek or playing
fetch. Bengals have high requirements for
play and activity, therefore plenty of
colorful toys, climbing post (cat trees) are a bonus as they love high places. Toys
should be stimulating and human interaction
should be provided as they can be quite
mischievous and sometimes destructive when
bored. If you are away from home a lot
during the day, then a companion cat might
be in order. Another high energy breed would
be ideal.
These beautiful cats have a
coat that is a rich
diversity of color. The Bengal coat pattern
is either black spotted or classic (marbled). Rosettes
(a
spot with at least 2 colors) are highly
desired. Bengals have several colors and two
coat patterns.
There are
several colors and
patterns that are recognized and eligible for
competition: Seal Sepia, Brown Marbled
Tabby, Brown Spotted Tabby, Seal Sepia,
Marbled Tabby, (Seal Sepias have yellow, gold
and green eyes). Seal Mink Marbled
Tabby, Seal Mink Spotted Tabby, Seal Minks have
aqua colored eyes and very distinctive
markings with good contrast. SpottedSeal
Lynx Point and Marbled Seal Lynx Point.
Commonly called Snow Leopards, these cats
have white to cream coats with pale spots or
marbling and crystal blue eyes. Bengal cats
are the only breed of cat which displays
the gold or pearl dusting effect usually
called glitter. Glitter is caused by hollow
clear hairs that sparkle like diamonds when
inthe sun. Its pelt has a rich smooth satin
or silk feel. The marbled coat is the most
luxurious to the touch. The marbling was
introduced by use of the American
Shorthaired Tabby in early breeding
programs, Bengals however have taken the
marbled effect to it's most beautiful
extreme.
Bengals are best
kept indoors except while on a leash when out of doors. If
outside unsupervised, a neighbor or someone passing by might
find its attractive, exotic looks desirable and adopt your
cat. There are also many other dangers to your cat. Fleas,
dogs, cars, ticks, and disease are all things that can harms
your cat.
With love, trust and respect for each
other, having a Bengal can be can be one of the best
experiences with having a pet.
Their beautiful and
unusual coat, may be one thing that attracted you
to the Bengal, but
it's not just a possession to be owned.
Having them as a member of your family, you will never be
disappointed. Enjoy the
Bengal , they will bond as completely to you
as you bond to them, plus in doing so you
will have a richly enhanced life with a pet
whose loyality and devotion to you is beyond
measure.
